The Bachelor has talked about the metaphor of the
"crystal radio villigers" living remotely in a developing country. The
crystal radio villigers have a crystal radio set encased inside a
ceremonial drum. The designated "information elder" for the villigers
turns the drum upside-down, pushing into the ground the crystal set
grounding rod(s) that is attached rim-side to the top of the drum, casts
the antenna wire into a tree, places a conch shell on top of the bottom
of the upturned drum and adjusts the belt that the antenna is attached
to around the coil around the drum, until there's a transmitted signal.
In this way, the villigers listen to the information coming out of the
conch shell used as a sound amplifier pertaining to current events in
the world and need-to-know content on audio. When the villigers receive
the information for the day, they undo the above setting up, turn the
drum right side up again, and they're able to play on the drum as an
instrument. This
metaphor tries to illustrate the dichotomy of music and information.
The villigers have to tend to the responsibility of knowing what's going
on, but they need to do it in a way consistent with simple living. The
minimalism that this task is based on is conducive to a meditative
state. When the villigers drum on the drum as an instrument, they're
enjoying themselves and that pertains to the hedonistic side of things.
The links and content the Bachelor shares here, as well as much of the culturally based
meaning it relates to is based on this metaphor. Shares @ http://hbannounce.blogspot.com/search/label/Audio
