Here's some food for thought Tropical Soulvangelical has for people if we truly think we're fighting the good fight. It's about that often paraphrased passage by Joseph Neimoller, but here's how TSV reframes it. A couple of playground bullies are carrying a nerd to a garbage can. On his way to the garbage can, the nerd says out loud, "First they came for this one group and I didn't speak out. Then they came for another group and I didn't speak out." As the bullies are tipping the nerd into the garbage can, the nerd says, "And then they came for me..." Then the bullies walk away from the garbage can with the nerd's feet sticking out of the top and you hear his voice resonate from within the can saying, "...and there was no one left to speak for me." As the bullies still keep walking away, one bully says to the other, "I think he doth protest too much." So TSV's point is that if you really hold the values of faith and principle near and dear, you've got to find a way of doing much better than that. He doesn't remember either Gandhi or MLK paraphrasing Neimoller at opportune moments. That's because he's observed that they found a way of fighting back, and accordingly did away with wasting time with the Neimoller references.
